Cambridge NCI vs Foxton 2nd team

Saturday 6th May 2017

The 2nd team started their season with an away fixture at Fitwilliam Playing fields. We welcomed Mitchell Cox, Richard Wilson and Tim Saxon to the club, and welcomed Jake Williams for his first second team game.

We were inserted by the opposition, who snared captain Gadsby early. Deano (21) and Tim Saxon (23) built the innings steadily, before Ed Goff played our innings of the day (44). Twiggy (15) batted fluently before falling to an excellent catch, Richard (18) gave Ed good support, before the late order scoring was dominated by Mitchell (30 not out) with good support from Ada (8 not out). 186 for 8 off 45 overs.

Mitchell removed both NCI openers, Tim O’Connell got the NCI captain, and then NCI’s 2 best batsmen settled into the chase. It was cat and mouse, as Foxton bowled tightly (Mitchell, Tim, Deano, Ada) in the early and middle stages of the innings, before NCI started to accelerate towards their target. We finally got another wicket in the last 10 overs, through Jake’s excellent catch at long leg, at which point NCI required 8 runs per over to win. David Norman scored 95 not out to see NCI home, in spite of regularly losing partners at the other end, in a last over finish. This was an enjoyable and exciting game, which posed questions of technique and temperament, and it will be important to turn more of the individual moments our way as we move on to the upcoming matches.

Team: Nigel, Tim Saxon, Deano, Ed, Twiggy, Richard, Mitchell, Tom, Tim O’Connell, Ada, Jake
